ISO 14001 - Certification of Environmental Management Systems

ISO 14001:2015 focuses on a strategic approach to environmental management.

What is strategic environmental management?

In the future, external and internal problems that may affect the environment must be taken into account in the business context of an organization. In addition, measures for dealing with these problems must be defined in the environmental management system (EMS).

What role does management play?

A new section has been added to the standard that makes top management responsible for explaining their leadership in and commitment to environmental management. Management can delegate the resulting responsibility to others, but remains accountable.

What else does ISO 14001 cover?

Protection of the environment

In future, a company's environmental policy must include an obligation to "protect the environment". This includes the "prevention of pollution" and "other" obligations such as the use of sustainable resources, measures for climate protection and adaptation to climate change as well as the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems.

Environmental performance

Emphasis must also be placed on improved performance in dealing with environmental issues. The organization must define criteria for assessing its environmental performance using appropriate indicators.

Life cycle approach

The organization must maintain control over environmental impacts from raw material extraction to the end of a product's life cycle. This does not imply that a product life cycle assessment (LCA) must be carried out. However, the organization must give due consideration to the phases in which the product/service is under its control or influence.

Communication

The importance of internal and external communication and the requirement to treat both equally are emphasized in the revised environmental management standard. The organization may decide whether or not to inform the public about a certification. However, when making this decision, it must ensure that it acts in accordance with the regulations.

Documentation

The term "documented information" replaces the previously used terms "documents" and "records". The organization is free to decide when "procedures" are to be used. Any format (paper, cloud, etc.) can be used.
